Tuning the Instrument: Mindfulness and Stuff

Wednesday, January 14th | 2-3pm EST

Presenters:

  • Dustin Abrego, Academic Advisor, Lansing Community College
  • Jim Owens, Licensed Professional Counselor, Lansing Community College

In an era of shifting student needs and evolving campus cultures, resilience is essential. "Tuning the Instrument: Mindfulness and Stuff" invites participants to explore practical, research-backed strategies that strengthen focus, reduce stress, and help educators and students thrive in new norms. Drawing on evidence from the National Institutes of Health and Harvard Graduate School of Education, this session reframes mindfulness as a proactive practice that fosters adaptability, academic success, and emotional well-being. Through interactive exercises and the 5 A’s framework Attention, Acknowledge, Allow, Accept, Appreciation participants will learn simple, effective ways to model mindful leadership and support student persistence. Attendees will leave with tools to promote resilience in themselves and their institutions, contributing to a stronger, more adaptive future for Michigan higher education.

This is the first webinar in ACPA-Michigan's 2026 Webinar Series "Doing More with Less," which will feature presentations from higher education faculty and staff about how their campus remains steadfast in centering student success while facing budget cuts, minimized staffs, and uncertain futures. We hope you'll join us!

Sashay Into Success: Group Advising that Slays

Tuesday, March 3rd | 2-3pm EST

Presenter:

  • Colleen McChesney, Academic Advisor, Eastern Michigan University

Managing a large caseload of students doesn’t have to mean sacrificing connection, clarity, or student engagement! In this interactive session, participants will learn how to design and implement group advising experiences that builds community, fosters student agency, and creates connections that last beyond a single session – a true slay! This model centers student empowerment, collaboration with faculty, and advising sessions that are equal parts educational and energizing. The session will highlight our successful group advising initiatives catered towards first-semester students, which include building confidence around degree audits, utilizing registration tools, getting to know their student success team, and feeling comfortable with their degree program. Advisors and student success professionals will leave with ready-to-use ideas, facilitation tips, and creative engagement strategies that turn advising from a to-do list into a mainstage moment!

This is the second webinar in ACPA-Michigan's 2026 Webinar Series "Doing More with Less," which will feature presentations from higher education faculty and staff about how their campus remains steadfast in centering student success while facing budget cuts, minimized staffs, and uncertain futures. We hope you'll join us!
