2026 ACPA-Michigan Award Information
Nominations for the 2026 ACPA-Michigan Awards are now open! Please complete this form to nominate an individual or program for the ACPA-Michigan (ACPA-MI) awards. All awards recipients and nominees will be announced during the ACPA Annual Convention on March 30 - April 2, 2026 in Baltimore, Maryland. Recipients will receive a physical award and a printed certificate, and will be recognized on the ACPA website, ACPA-MI website and in convention materials.
NOMINATION DEADLINE: October 26th, 2025 at 11:59pm.
NOMINATION CRITERIA:
- Nominees are affiliated with an institution or organization based in the State of Michigan.
- Nominees who are currently unemployed with the most recent employer based in the State of Michigan will be considered as award recipients.
- Nominees do not have to be a current member of ACPA or ACPA-MI members.
- Nominators (whether an ACPA-member or not) may submit nominations.
- Any member of ACPA-College Student Educators International (ACPA) can be nominated for an award.
- Award recipients are encouraged to attend the ACPA Annual Convention, but are not required to in order to receive their award.
- Active ACPA members may self-nominate.
Chapter Awards
These awards are presented at the ACPA Annual Convention. Nominations are reviewed by the ACPA-Michigan Leadership Team, and we are proud to recognize our membership for their contributions to the field!
(1) Colleen Lindsay-Bailey Outstanding Service Award - This award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions and meaningful impact to ACPA-MI and the larger Association or the profession. This individual has demonstrated outstanding leadership and continued service toward ACPA-MI. Colleen Lindsay-Bailey served the ACPA-Michigan board of directors as treasurer from 2003 through 2018 in addition to serving on the Presidential Team from 2013-2016. Colleen has served as a student affairs educator at Grand Valley State University for 21 years in various roles and capacities - mostly in Housing and Residence Life leading the Residence Education Team. She has served in multiple university presidential acceleration teams for advancing innovation and student support and served as the Administrative Professional Chairperson representing all AP staff at GVSU.
(2) Equity & Inclusion Award - This award encourages and recognizes outstanding efforts addressing equity and inclusion issues in higher education. The award may be presented to an individual or campus/departmental program that demonstrated creativity, innovation, and student impact in making significant contributions to equity and inclusion.
(3) Excellence in Leadership Award - This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated continuous and sustained leadership in the profession of student affairs. Recipients have held leadership positions at state, regional, and national levels in professional associations and have been recognized as leaders in both scholarly and practitioner roles.
(4) John Zaugra Outstanding Research/Publication Award - This award recognizes an individual or team that has made exceptional scholarly contributions and significantly advanced learning in policies, practices, student development, and other related topics under the umbrella of higher education and student affairs. Open to higher education and student affairs researchers at all career stages, the award honors work published within the past two years that demonstrates methodological rigor and impacts the field. John Zaugra (1941-2024) served as a counselor in the University Counseling Center for 32 years, retiring in 2012 as a senior counselor with emeritus status. He served at GVSU as President of Student Affairs, Editor of the GVSU Journal for eight years, and has the John Zaugra Writing Award, named after him. He authored two books on career development and was instrumental in educational programs for immigrants wanting to be citizens.
(5) Les Carlin Professional Development Award - This award encourages new full-time professionals (1-3 years) to take advantage of the fellowship of a conference and the benefits of ACPA-MI membership. Candidates for the award should be individuals currently employed in a student development area of higher education who have not previously attended an ACPA-MI conference. The award covers the registration fee for next year’s ACPA-MI conference and a one-year ACPA-MI membership. Leslie "Les" O. Carlin (1916-2002) made significant contributions to higher education through his long tenure at Central Michigan University (CMU). He served as a dedicated counselor in the CMU Counseling Center from 1948 to 1981, offering guidance and support to countless students. His expertise and leadership in the field of counseling were widely recognized, and upon retiring, he was honored with the title of professor emeritus.
