

ACPA-MI Honors Excellence in Service and Inclusion
Colleen Lindsay-Bailey Outstanding Service Award – Nick Malendowski
ACPA-MI is proud to recognize Nick Malendowski, Associate Director of the Honors College at Eastern Michigan University, for his outstanding dedication to higher education. Since entering the field just over a year ago, Nick has made a significant impact within ACPA and beyond. He has served on the 2023 ACPA-MI Conference Committee and the 2024 JEDI Conference Committee, leading to his election as JEDI Conference Chair for 2025 and Representative-At-Large for ACPA-MI.
At the 2024 ACPA Convention in Chicago, Nick actively engaged with peers at Connection Point, attended social events, and collaborated with chapters nationwide. His contributions extend beyond ACPA-MI, serving as an ACPA Ambassador, Coordinator for Convention Ambassadors and Scholarships & Awards, and program reviewer since 2021. Additionally, he has presented at multiple national conferences and shared insights as a guest on Student Affairs Now, discussing first-generation graduate student experiences.Join us in celebrating Nick Malendowski for his exceptional service to ACPA-MI and the broader higher education community!
Equity & Inclusion Award – Dr. Leland Harper
We proudly honor Dr. Leland Harper, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Coordinator of the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Certificate Program at Siena Heights University, for his commitment to equity and inclusion. Dr. Harper developed and launched a 12-credit interdisciplinary JEDI certificate in 2023, now pursued by 60 undergraduate students. He is expanding the program to include graduate courses and workforce development initiatives for organizations across Michigan. At Siena Heights, he also chairs the Black Faculty and Staff Committee and the Faculty Welfare Committee.
Dr. Harper’s research focuses on (anti)racism. He is the editor of the Philosophy of Race book series at Vernon Press and has peer-reviewed works for Palgrave MacMillan and Brill. His authored and edited works include Into the Fire: Essays at the Intersection of Race and Communication and The Future of Race in Canada. His latest book, Racist, Not Racist, Antiracist: Language and the Dynamic Disaster of American Racism, is nominated for the 2025 Gitler Award by the American Philosophical Association.
Beyond academia, Dr. Harper collaborates with nonprofits and advocacy groups such as Journey to Diversity Workplaces, Carapace Wetaskiwin, and The Canadian Race Relations Foundation to advance justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Chapter Awards
These awards are presented at the 2025 Annual Convention in Long Beach, CA. Nominations are reviewed by the Annual Conference Committee. We are proud to recognize our membership for their contributions to the field!
(1) Colleen Lindsay-Bailey Outstanding Service Award - This award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions and meaningful impact to ACPA-MI and the larger Association or the profession. This individual has demonstrated outstanding leadership and continued service toward ACPA-MI. Colleen Lindsay-Bailey served the ACPA-Michigan board of directors as treasurer from 2003 through 2018 in addition to serving on the Presidential Team from 2013-2016. Colleen has served as a student affairs educator at Grand Valley State University for 21 years in various roles and capacities - mostly in Housing and Residence Life leading the Residence Education Team. She has served in multiple university presidential acceleration teams for advancing innovation and student support and served as the Administrative Professional Chairperson representing all AP staff at GVSU.
(2) Equity & Inclusion Award - This award encourages and recognizes outstanding efforts addressing equity and inclusion issues in higher education. The award may be presented to an individual or campus/departmental program that demonstrated creativity, innovation, and student impact in making significant contributions to equity and inclusion.
(3) Excellence in Leadership Award - This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated continuous and sustained leadership in the profession of student affairs. Recipients have held leadership positions at state, regional, and national levels in professional associations and have been recognized as leaders in both scholarly and practitioner roles.
(4) John Zaugra Outstanding Research/Publication Award - This award recognizes an individual or team that has made exceptional scholarly contributions and significantly advanced learning in policies, practices, student development, and other related topics under the umbrella of higher education and student affairs. Open to higher education and student affairs researchers at all career stages, the award honors work published within the past two years that demonstrates methodological rigor and impacts the field. John Zaugra (1941-2024) served as a counselor in the University Counseling Center for 32 years, retiring in 2012 as a senior counselor with emeritus status. He served at GVSU as President of Student Affairs, Editor of the GVSU Journal for eight years, and has the John Zaugra Writing Award, named after him. He authored two books on career development and was instrumental in educational programs for immigrants wanting to be citizens.
(5) Les Carlin Professional Development Award - This award encourages new full-time professionals (1-3 years) to take advantage of the fellowship of a conference and the benefits of ACPA-MI membership. Candidates for the award should be individuals currently employed in a student development area of higher education who have not previously attended an ACPA-MI conference. The award covers the registration fee for next year’s ACPA-MI conference and a one-year ACPA-MI membership. Leslie "Les" O. Carlin (1916-2002) made significant contributions to higher education through his long tenure at Central Michigan University (CMU). He served as a dedicated counselor in the CMU Counseling Center from 1948 to 1981, offering guidance and support to countless students. His expertise and leadership in the field of counseling were widely recognized, and upon retiring, he was honored with the title of professor emeritus.
